12. Justin Bieber – Love Yourself (Brynny x Teddy Cream Bootleg)

11. Banks – Beggin’ For Thread (Gryffin & Hotel Garuda Remix)

10. Grizfolk – Hymnals (RAC Remix)

On repeat for much of the later half of 2015. So fresh, so clean.

9. Susanne Sundfor – Delerious (Richard X Remix)

Richard X was and remains a bad, bad man. This is a force majeure.

8. London Grammar – Strong (High Contrast Remix)

Another remix that isn’t strictly from 2015. But that’s when I discovered it, fell in love with it, and deemed it a necessity of life.

7. A-Ha – Take On Me (Kygo Remix)

Trop House knows no bounds! It’s attacking the 80’s! Run for your liiiiiiiiiiivvvvessss!

6. Notorious B.I.G. f. Ja Rule & Ralph Tresvant – Old Thing Back (Matoma Remix)

This remix might be a bit older than 2015, but 2015 is when I discovered it. Matter of fact, I’ll never forget how I discovered this song. A friend played it on my birthday on the way to the beach. A soundtrack to happiness is hard to forget. Oh yeah, and this a gigantic banger to boot.

5. Rihanna – Bitch Better Have My Money (Handbag House vs. Kat Krazy Bootleg Mix)

So, so, so much fun. A little nuts, but an enormous earworm all the same.

4. Ed Sheeran – Photograph (Felix Jaehn Remix)

Felix Jaehn wrapped up the remixer-of-the-year award with this one. I don’t think there is such an award, but if there is, it’s his. Ed Sheeran’s voice let’s a DJ shine if he/she knows what they’re doing. Jaehn knows. This is bliss.

3. Miguel – Leaves (Adam Foster’s Sweet California Remix)

Speaking of bliss. This remix evokes sadness, nostalgia, euphoria. It’s a deep breath on a sunny day in an Indian Summer. Life moves quickly. Thankfully music like this helps us live in the moment.

2. Glass Animals – Pools (Roosevelt Remix)

Roosevelt absolutely smashes this one out of the park. This is the most playful remix of the year. You can hear the original metamorphosing into a different state. “Pools” is itself, one of the songs of the year. It’s adventurous, animalistic, and ambidextrous. This remix is all of that, but it smothers peanut butter vibes over the melody and lets the track slither around unabated. If all the animals in the world had a giant pool party where humans were not invited, this would be on a delicious, fruity loop.

1. OMI – Cheerleader (Felix Jaehn Remix)

Duh. It was never going to be anything else. Bigger than massive. And for good reason. Distilled hookery.

My Top 20 Songs of September 2013

The summer was sensational for songs, and September didn’t let up. Brilliant tune after tune made its way to my ears. I went in detail with the written accompaniments of my favourite songs of the summer, so I’ve decided to switch things up a bit here and practice some brevity.

That said, here are my Top 20 Songs of September 2013, described in 10 words or less.

20. Porcelain Raft – The Way Out

Getting pretty damn good at using synths that “cry.”

19. Flyleaf – Something Better

The best not-by-Paramore Paramore song of the year.

18. Two Door Cinema Club – Changing Of The Seasons

The seasons might change, but the hits keep coming.

17. In The Valley Below – Peaches

Peaches is delicious, succulent, juicy, fresh, from the first bite.

16. Foxes – Youth

Those lips. That look. The hooks. This song.

15. Autumn Hill – Fire

Brilliant New Country-Pop. That chorus, burning hearts and ears.

14. Katy Perry – Roar/Ylvis – The Fox/Natalia Kills – Saturday Night

Does The Fox Say Roar On Saturday Night?

13. Gavin DeGraw – Best I Ever Had

Toe-tapping, foot-thumping, piano pop of the highest order.

12. Goldfrapp – Jo/Drew

Ethereal. Deep breaths. Cold air. Warm summers. Jo and Drew.

11. Mikky Ekko – Kids (Monsieur Adi remix)/Zedd – Clarity

Kids: when remix trumps original. Clarity: a flat-out smash.

10. Arcade Fire – Reflektor

A reflection of a band with unparalleled creative might.

9. Editors – The Phone Book

My favourite song from their latest album. Wonderful.

8. The Killers – Shot At The Night

Simply, spectacularly: M83 + The Killers = a monster tune.

A fantastic choice of a cover that makes magic. #TeamCrow.

6. Placebo -A Million Little Pieces

No more glowing in the dark for… my heart.

5. Avicii – Wake Me Up

Made when Gustaffson came out to it vs. Jones. Monstrous.

4. King of Leon – Supersoaker

Meh at first. I was so wrong. Absolutely massive.

3. Blue October – Sway/Bleed Out

Sway: Justin Furstenfeld doesn’t get the credit he so rightly deserves.

Bleed Out: He’s shown an incomparable ear for melody, mood, major songs.

2. Alt-j – Matilda (Johnson Somerset remix)

Absolute transcendence. Rarely ever said of remixes. Pure, powerful, bliss.

1. Neko Case – Local Girl

For me, quite simply the best voice on the planet.

And a bonus, brilliant, breathtaking live rendition.
